Jackson delivers on `This Is It,’ early fans say

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

“Michael Jackson’s This Is It” premiered to high praise from fans who applauded at each number as though they were at a concert and marveled as the singer stepped nimbly through his moonwalk and other signature moves.

Jackson, 50 when he died last June, kept pace with backup dancers half his age during rehearsals for such hits as “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “Human Nature.” The film was shot as Jackson prepared for a marathon concert stand in London that never happened.

“He looked better than he did when he was 30,” said Jessica Childs, a 21-year-old aspiring dancer who caught the Los Angeles premiere. “His voice stood out.”

Lawmaker: Iran to respond to UN nuke plan Thursday

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

An Iranian lawmaker says Iran will formally respond on Thursday to a U.N.-drafted plan to ship much of its uranium abroad for enrichment.

Iran has been considering the deal — which Western leaders hope will ease concerns over Tehran’s controversial nuclear program — for a week now.

Lawmaker Mohammad Karamirad did not provide details, but Tehran’s response is expected to be handed in at the U.N. nuclear agency in Vienna. Karamirad’s remark was reported by the semiofficial ISNA news agency.

Another lawmaker, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, says Iran’s top security body will make a final decision on the proposal later Wednesday.

Amnesty: Israel withholds water from Palestinians

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Amnesty International is accusing Israel of pumping disproportionate amounts of drinking water from an aquifer it controls in the West Bank, depriving local Palestinians of their fair share.

The London-based human rights group also said in a report released Tuesday, that Israel has blocked infrastructure projects that would improve existing water supplies to Palestinians — both in the West Bank and those living in the Gaza Strip.

“This scarcity has affected every walk of life for Palestinians,” Amnesty’s researcher on Israel, Donatella Rovera, told The Associated Press in an interview Monday, ahead of the report’s release. “A greater amount of water has to be granted to them.”

Israeli officials deny the accusations.

Ark. energy companies make case for climate bill

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

An industry group said Monday that alternative energy companies need Congress to pass the climate bill so they will be assured of a long-term market, one that will ultimately lower energy costs and employ 25,000 in Arkansas by 2020.

The bill, which is before the Senate, includes a cap-and-trade system that would require factories, refineries and power generation plants to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other climate-changing pollution. Companies would be able to purchase emission allowances to limit reductions.

Ralf Sigrist, president and chief executive of Nordex USA, which is building a $40 million windmill factory in Jonesboro, said Monday that wind energy companies won’t replace other power generation sources already operating, but wind is an affordable option in the nation’s energy portfolio.

Sudan ‘rejects’ new US approach

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Sudan “rejects” the new US policy toward Khartoum although it acknowledges the importance of its ties with Washington, an advisor to President Omar al-Beshir said in remarks published on Saturday.

“We categorically reject the US strategy in its current form,” said Mustafa Osman Ismail, a former foreign minister, quoted in local newspapers.

The United States on Monday announced a new policy of “broad engagement” with Sudan but warned of a tough response if Khartoum ignores incentives to stop “abuses” and “genocide” in Darfur.

More evacuations as Puerto Rico oil blaze burns on

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Authorities in Puerto Rico on Friday ordered the evacuation of hundreds more residents from homes around a huge fire at an oil depot which spewed a column of toxic black smoke into the sky near the capital San Juan.

Some 130 firefighters, backed by National Guard troops, were still trying to put out the massive fire, hours after an early morning explosion triggered the blaze at the Caribbean Petroleum Corp. storage facility at Bayamon.

After initially destroying 11 tanks at the 40-tank site, the fire spread to at least six more, containing products such as jet fuel, bunker fuel and gasoline. It was one of the largest fires ever in the U.S. Caribbean island territory.

World awaits Iran’s decision on uranium proposal

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

The U.S. and its allies hoped to secure Iran’s approval Friday for a proposed deal that would ship most of the country’s uranium abroad for enrichment and ease Western fears about Iran’s potential to make a nuclear weapon.

Approval of the draft agreement would be a key victory for President Barack Obama, who has stepped up diplomatic engagement with Iran since he took office in January and faulted the Bush administration for refusing to talk to U.S. adversaries.

Russia and France, which are both involved in the deal, backed it Friday. U.S. officials have also expressed support, but Iran’s endorsement is far from certain.
