Saturday, October 31st, 2009No Philly transit union strike during World Series
Saturday, October 31st, 2009The Philadelphia transit system’s largest union agreed Saturday not to go on strike as contract talks continued hours before the start of Game 3 of the World Series, Pennsylvania’s governor and the city’s mayor said.
Gov. Ed Rendell and Mayor Michael Nutter told reporters late Saturday afternoon that a 6 p.m. strike deadline would pass with no walkout by the union representing more than 5,000 bus drivers, subway and trolley operators and mechanics of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority.
Rendell said there had been “substantial progress” and that although no agreement had yet been reached, he hoped one could be concluded quickly. He said he had told both sides to stay at the bargaining table or risk “significant consequences” of losing state support for mass transit.
“It’s my hope that we can get a contract before the night is done,” the governor said. He declined to discuss issues still dividing the two sides, but said such negotiations always centered on wages, pensions and health care.
Geithner: Recovery could be ‘a little choppy’
Saturday, October 31st, 2009Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the economic recovery “could be a little choppy” and it’s going to take a while.
Geithner told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that bringing back jobs and the confidence of investors will be the real test of recovery. He declined to say whether the recession is over, saying economists will figure that out years from now.
Recent encouraging news in the economy “shows that — when you act with force — you can stabilize a crisis like this,” he said in the interview that will air Sunday.
“But this is going to be a different recovery than in the past because Americans are going to have to save more. A lot of damage was caused by this crisis. It’s going to take some time for us to grow out of this.

Sony stays in the red, trims annual loss forecast
Friday, October 30th, 2009Sony reported a smaller-than-expected 26.3 billion yen ($289 million) quarterly loss as cost cuts combined with healthy sales of PlayStation 3 game consoles and Michael Jackson hits helped it inch toward recovery.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant has been battered by the global slowdown, sliding prices of gadgets and its failure to produce new blockbuster consumer products. But Tokyo-based Sony Corp. said Friday it now expects a smaller flow of red ink for the full fiscal year through March 2010.
It’s forecasting a 95 billion yen ($1 billion) loss compared with the initial projection for a 120 billion yen ($1.3 billion) loss. The new forecast is marginally better than the 98.9 billion yen loss it suffered the previous fiscal year.
Haitian prime minister fired by Senate
Friday, October 30th, 2009Prime Minister Michele Pierre-Louis was removed from office by the Haitian Senate shortly after midnight Friday, in a move that could imperil efforts to attract foreign investment to the storm-wracked, impoverished country.
The vote of 18 of 29 senators to censure Pierre-Louis — most voting against her were members of President Rene Preval’s party — also dissolves the cabinet. Political instability could imperil efforts by the international community and Haitian leaders, including Pierre-Louis, to attract foreign money to the embattled Caribbean nation.
Most of those voting against the prime minister, who is Haiti’s head of government and was nominated by Preval last year, were members of Preval’s own Lespwa party. They took control of the Senate just weeks ago after winning June elections praised by some international observers but marred by low turnout and fraud allegations.

Obama considering scaled-down Afghan war plan
Thursday, October 29th, 2009President Barack Obama is considering a scaled-down version of the war plan advanced by his top Afghanistan commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, U.S. officials say.
Such a narrowed military mission would increase American forces to accomplish the commander’s broadest goals of protecting Afghan cities and key infrastructure. But with fewer troops, the strategy likely would cut back on McChrystal’s ambitious objectives, amounting to what one official described as “McChrystal Light.”
Senior White House officials Wednesday stressed, however, that the president has not settled on any new troop numbers and continues to debate other strategic approaches to the 8-year-old Afghanistan war. The officials say Obama has not yet settled on the narrowed option or any other as his final choice for how to overhaul the war effort.
