Tiger’s troubles widen his distance from blacks

December 6th, 2009

Amid all the headlines generated by Tiger Woods’ troubles — the puzzling car accident, the suggestions of marital turmoil and multiple mistresses — little attention has been given to the race of the women linked with the world’s greatest golfer. Except in the black community.

When three white women were said to be romantically involved with Woods in addition to his blonde, Swedish wife, blogs, airwaves and barbershops started humming, and Woods’ already tenuous standing among many blacks took a beating.

On the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner radio show, Woods was the butt of jokes all week.

“Thankfully, Tiger, you didn’t marry a black woman. Because if a sister caught you running around with a bunch of white hoochie-mamas,” one parody suggests in song, she would have castrated him.

‘SNL’ can’t resist taking swipes at Tiger Woods

December 6th, 2009

Tiger Woods and his marital problems proved a tempting target for “Saturday Night Live.”

In both a skit and multiple “Weekend Update” jokes this weekend, NBC’s comedy institution took on the golfer, who has admitted to letting his family down with “transgressions” that came to light following a strange Thanksgiving weekend incident outside his Florida home.

In one skit, actor Jason Sudeikis portrayed Wolf Blitzer on CNN’s “Situation Room” reporting on a news conference that Woods (played by Kenan Thompson) and his wife (played by host Blake Lively) were holding outside his home. After Woods admitted to “multiple” transgressions, his wife looked surprised and the screen quickly shifted back to Blitzer.

AP IMPACT: Timber program becomes vast entitlement

December 6th, 2009

A federal program that began as a safety net for Pacific Northwest logging communities hard-hit by battles over the spotted owl in the 1990s has morphed into a sprawling entitlement — one that ships vast amounts of money to states with little or no historic connection to timber, an analysis by The Associated Press shows.

Nicknamed “county payments,” the timber program was supposed to assist counties shortchanged when national forests limited logging to protect the northern spotted owl and other endangered species.

Since becoming law in 2000, the program has distributed more than $3 billion to 700 counties in 41 states with national forests and helped fund everything from schools to libraries to jails.

The federal largesse initially focused on a handful of Western states, with Oregon alone receiving nearly $2 billion.

Spending of that magnitude, though, sparked a new timber war — this one among politicians eager to get their hands on some of the logging money.

Iran chokes off Internet on eve of student rallies

December 6th, 2009

Government opponents shouted “Allahu Akbar” and “Death to the Dictator” from Tehran’s rooftops in the pouring rain on the eve of student demonstrations planned for Monday. Authorities choked off Internet access and warned journalists working for foreign media to stick to their offices for the next three days.

The measures were aimed at depriving the opposition of its key means of mobilizing the masses as Iran’s clerical rulers keep a tight lid on dissent. Government opponents are seeking, nonetheless, to get large numbers of demonstrators to turn out Monday and show their movement still has momentum.

Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi threw his support behind the student demonstrations and declared that his movement was is still alive. A statement posted on his Web site said the clerical establishment cannot silence students and was losing legitimacy in the Iranian people’s minds.

Snow dusts the South from Louisiana to Georgia

December 6th, 2009

Louisiana got its earliest snowflakes ever as people across the South awakened to a dusting of powder.

Snow started falling in the region late Friday and continued into Saturday morning.

Snow also caused a few cancellations Saturday at Washington’s Dulles International Airport.

The National Weather Service says several Louisiana towns reported two to three inches of snow. Photos posted online showed clumps of snow on otherwise brown yards — though many people scraped together enough for snowmen.

The storm also dumped three to four inches of snow overnight in parts of Mississippi. Tennessee and North Carolina reported light snow at higher elevations.

AP: Manufacturing areas lead surprise job comeback

December 6th, 2009

As record numbers of orders flow through Legacy Furniture Group’s manufacturing plant, workers toil between towers of piled foam and incomplete end tables precariously stacked five pieces high.

With a 10 percent sales growth this year, Legacy has quickly forgotten the recession’s low point in March, when weak order volumes forced the company to implement four-day work weeks.

In November alone, the company that specializes in furniture for the medical industry added a half-dozen employees to its staff of 35. These days, everyone is clocking overtime and the 40,000-square-foot factory is starting to feel awfully cramped.

“We’re starting to stack people instead of stacking furniture,” jokes co-founder Todd Norris as he navigates rows of hand-sanded chair frames.

Baucus: Girlfriend merited U.S. attorney nomination

December 6th, 2009

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus defended recommending his girlfriend for appointment as Montana’s U.S. attorney, saying Saturday his one-time staff member and the former state prosecutor is “highly qualified” but eventually withdrew her nomination.

Baucus said that he began dating former state office director Melodee Hanes after they were both separated from their spouses. The Montana Democrat said they did not have an affair, but began dating while she worked for him.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele called Saturday for a Senate Ethics Committee investigation of Baucus’ actions. Steele said the panel should determine “why Senator Baucus put his personal needs above those of the people of Montana.”

`Junior’ Gotti’s 4th mob mistrial may be his last

December 5th, 2009

A new judge, new charges, new star witness and a new jury added up to a familiar result — a mistrial for John “Junior” Gotti on racketeering charges. This one, though, might be his last.

After four trials in five years — all ending in hung juries — for the son of John Gotti, the stylish former head of the Gambino family, both sides seem weary of the fight.

Once a deadlocked jury forced an end to the 2-month-old trial Tuesday, jurors hugged Gotti’s family outside federal court. Prosecutors did not demand he be held under house arrest or announce plans for a retrial. A prosecutor shook his hand and wished him well.

This prosecution seemed to be the government’s most serious attempt to permanently incarcerate the 45-year-old man who has admitted he was once part of the Gambino crime family before he quit in the 1990s.

Gotti was accused in this trial of roles in two murders; the most serious allegation against him in earlier cases was a beating of Guardian Angel leader Curtis Sliwa. Jurors deliberated 11 days before saying they had been evenly split on almost every count.
